Shiatsu

How is Shiatsu different from Swedish massage?

Oriental modalities - Shiatsu, Acupressure, Thai Massage  - are much different than Western style massage. The client lies on mats (Japanese tatami), wears loose clothes, and  there is no oil or cream used. The therapist applies gentle pressure and stretches the  meridians and points to remove tension from the body and promote deep relaxation.

Does Shiatsu massage hurt?

Many people believe that this form of massage is painful; however, this may only happen if your massage was done by an inexperienced practitioner. Because the client lies on mats and not on a table, it gives the therapist better leverage to apply as much pressure as necessary and for as long as needed. Shiatsu is a great choice for clients enjoying deep massages as well as those who prefer a more gentle touch.

Can Shiatsu be done on a massage table?

Yes, however, conducting this particular massage on a table limits the therapists. Many techniques, transitions, and stretches can be done only on the floor. For this reason, Zen Massage Center dedicates one room, covered with Japanese tatami, exclusively for Oriental massages such as Shiatsu or Thai Massage.
